Did Mannin ever reach Ramsey?
Feb 5th, 2010 at 8:56pm

There are few folk tales and legends floating around the mighty 'Mannin' did make it down the north, but is there any proof or hard facts to back up these stories ?

There is reputed to a be a picture of Mannin in Ramsey station - has anybody seen it or even better got a copy of it?

Discuss.....

I can't say I have ever seen any photos of No 16 anywhere more exotic than the Peel line.

As No 16 only worked the Peel line for her last season, I think it is unlikely, but not impossible that she reached Ramsey. The main reason being that, from my understanding, she was transferred to the Peel line because it's less severe gradients suited her somewhat tired boiler so sending her north would defy this logic.

But stranger things have happened!

The story was that Mannin and number of her sisters were use for deflection testing of various bridges and viaducts on the Ramsey line possibly in the 1920s or 1930s.

It is quite feasible, but whether it actually happened and more important recorded on film is another matter.

Fact or just another Manx fairy tale?

I'm sure I've seen photos of this deflection testing but I'm unsure as to where. In the photos I've seen, 16 certainly didn't feature.

With regards to Mannin being used on bridge testing, she certainly wasnt used on Glen Mooar or Glen Wyllin , as Glen Wyllin was rebuilt in 1915 - The locos used were Derby , Caedonia and Loch. Glen Mooar was rebuilt in 1921 and the locos used for testing on this occasion were Maitland, Kissack and Thornhill. The Sulby basket bridge was replaced in 1914 and the locos used on this occasion were Derby, Maitland, Thornhill, and Caledonia. All this information is in Boyds Vol 3 book - the Bible for all things I.O.M.R.!
I have heard rumours and i am sure that i have read somewhere in the many books , articles etc that Mannin is supposed to have got to Ramsey, i wonder if Tynwald Day is a possibility as most of the stock on the railway finished up at St.Johns that day. Wouldnt it be lovely if a photo eventually appeared of 16 in Ramsey- the Holy Grail!
