St Johns : Foxdale line bridge
Jun 18th, 2010 at 10:37am

Can anyone confirm if the track of the Douglas - Peel line went under the center of the bridge, or to the left side or the right side of the trackbed?

The bridge was built wide enough for double track under it, just need to get it right for a model layout.

Happy steamings,

John

As you look at the bridge from the station yard, towards Douglas, the line passes to the left hand side.

what a brilliant website.

with regard to the bridge, do we know if the capacity for double tracks under the bridge was put in place to extend the station yard or incase of making the entire line double track?

I don't think there are any other structures on the system that were constructed with double track capacity, but would be happy to be put right?

Something at the back of my mind tells me the Pulrose bridge was for double track......
And of course the St. Johns footbridge!

Seem to think you're right about the bridge at Pulrose Mike.
I can remember seeing a government report of the mid 1940's that surfaced from the office attic at Knockaloe. In that it certainly entertained the idea of a complete double track system. I don't know when the Pulrose bridge was built so can't say if the two are connected.
Regards.

Back to the Foxdale line overbridge, the IMR raised a number of objections to the original planned route of the Foxdale Railway in 1883, one being the proposed track width of the Foxdale line overbridge at the west of St. John's station would prevent the IMR from doubling their track to Peel (rather optimistic on traffic and getting two tracks around Glenfaba!).

An amendment to the Foxdale Railway Bill in 1884 allowed the route to be re-aligned to the eest of St. John's as built, but with a condition that the FR were to leave 25ft between bridge abutments sufficient for a double track under.
